Resilience

Rebecca Böhme

When it comes to facing and overcoming stress, crises and defeat, there are enormous differences between us. While some are derailed by the smallest bumps in the road, others overcome the most devastating experiences quickly.

‘Resilience’ is the term we now use to describe the mysterious ability that defines the latter group. The psychological ability to bounce back is a combination of disposition, cultural and personal experience and, as Rebecca Böhme demonstrates in many examples, it can change in the course of a life: practice, re-evaluation and membership in a community of mutual trust make greater resilience possible.
